Honeymoon planning
As the wedding approaches, we are starting to plan our honeymoon, which is going to be the funniest part, for sure.
We'll be leaving the 21st of april, land in san Francisco, spend 2 days there, visit the gazillion interesting places around California (and possibly meet with Jon and Phil), head to Vegas (OF COURSE), stroll around the US, offer David a beer wherever he is (hopefully in the US), chase Ido, my roomie from RISD which I miss like hell, have a stop in Ohio to finally give a huge hug to [info]gooroo, visit Washington DC (where the main attraction is sure [info]azcra and [info]photo_obscura ), go back to Providence 6 years later (and say hello to Eva, the amazing woman without whom I would have never gone to RISD) and after 3 weeks of driving around and taking pictures, we'll be in New York, ready to rob B&H and the Nintendo Store and go back home.

For those that have been asking: we are not going to have a wedding list, since we own everything we need (and duty would cost me too much if I did a wedding list at B&H, like I wanted to).
We are going to open a sorta wedding list at the travel agency taking care of our honeymoon and set a paypal account for the same purpose: depending on how much we raise our trip will be more or less ghetto, but as long as we have plane tickets, a car and some food we should be ok.

Any tips about car rental in the US? Is it ok to drive with an italian license or should we have some more documents? I've heard that in the US you can turn right even if the traffic light is red, if the way is clear. Is it true in every state? Is there some other rule I should know before I spend my honeymoon in some state jail?
Silly question: in the car you rent, is there usually a cd player that can read mp3s or should I specifically ask for that? because we are planning the soundtrack for the coast-to-coast and it would suck big time to find out that we cannot listen to that.

Oh: motels. Something we should know about sleeping accomodations before we leave? We don't want to book hotels (except for Frisco and NY) and sleep wherever we feel like it along the way, but if you have suggestions they're always very welcome.

we decided we can go to some tropical island when we're older, but something like that is now or never.
And we're planning to leave without clothes (except those we're wearing), only photo gear, and buy what wee need along the way.

I think your Italian license or passport would be enough for driving. I've never heard of tourists getting special drivers licenses for the U.S.

Yes, you can turn right at intersections after coming to a complete stop. If the way is clear, you can make a right turn unless there are signs that say not to.
April will probably be ok to travel coast to coast without booking motels. You may overlap spring break in some areas, but those people are headed to Cancun.

Hmmm, CD players that do MP3s? I don't know how common that is for new cars. I'd say you are more likely to find a jack for plugging in your iPod. To be on the safe side, I'd bring an FM transmitter and your MP3 player.

some people say it's needed an official translation of the licence released by some recognised company or something like that.
But I had never heard of it.

>I'd say you are more likely to find a jack for plugging in your iPod
which would be even more perfect!

thankyou for the info, they're precious!

What a fun trip that's going to be!

As for rental cars - a lot of the newer models have MP3 player connections. I also usually burn CDs through iTunes, and they play fine in my regular CD player.

I think right on red is ok most places, with localized exceptions (NYC?, etc). Here, it's understood as ok, but there are some lights with a no-right-on-red sign posted.

You may have to book hotels in the big cities ahead of time if you can't finds a place to crash...they fill up quickly. I thought it would be free-wheeling and cute to not book hotels in Paris, and spent every day rattling my suitcases through cobblestone streets asking every hotel if they had room. Not so fun.

we really hope so!

>Here, it's understood as ok, but there are some lights with a no-right-on-red sign posted.

great, I should be able to manage it.
It cannot be worse than driving in Milan, anyway.

>You may have to book hotels in the big cities ahead of time if you can't finds a place to crash...they fill up quickly

except for San Francisco and New York (in which we'll book an hotel ahead of time), we are planning to stay away from big cities and visit small towns.
I'm counting on the fact that it should be easy enugh to find an internet connection in the US (not so in Italy), so that we might book hotels online as we approach or something like that.

>hotels in Paris

don't even get me started on that...

We did our honeymoon this way, it was wonderful.
Be sure when you rent your car, that they understand what you are doing with it. SOme rental places will not let you take the car out of state, and others charge you extra for mileage.

As for driver's permits, go here:
http://www.usa.gov/Topics/Foreign_Visitors_Driving.shtml
An international driver's license must be obtained from your home country. This permit only verifies that you hold a valid license in your home country. It is your foreign driver's license that allows you to drive in the United States. Contact the authorities in your home country to get an international driving permit, as the United States does NOT issue international driver's licenses to foreign visitors.

And hotels... we camped in many places, it was really fun! But other than that, we had no trouble finding hotels in most places. Our trip was in August which is usually more difficult because families are travelling. April should be ok.

The only other thing is that in the higher-elevated areas, April can still be REALLY cold, especially at night. Same holds true if you are going through the desert.

HAve fun, congratulations!!!

baci e buon tutto

Ciao Sara, I just came back from a short US trip (NY, Miami and the Florida Keys). No problem for renting a car with the italian license. Some good offers are available online: check alamo, easy and the kind (I went with alamo because they had a free gps offer and gave an upgrade to a convertible for free).

About motels, I had no problem reserving with a few days advance. If you'd like to rent an apartment in NYC, a friend of mine rents her's for a good price (and it's in Lexington and 56th!!). For Frisko, this same friend recently stayed in a hotel and she has pretty happy...

send me a pm if you need more details (some pics available on my flickr)

cheers!!

I'm not sure if you'll have functioning cell phones, but I'm told that Google 411 is a great resource for road-tripping-- you check the map, see where you're likely to be in two hours, call Google 411, and get hooked up with a hotel/wacky art museum/Indian restaurant in that area:
1-800-GOOG-411
And it's free!
